The marquise is having its moment again, and I’m glad, because it’s one of the most efficient shapes a diamond can take: long, pointed, and covering more finger per carat than almost anything else. It’s also a shape where quality varies wildly and good examples are genuinely scarce. Slender or fuller, crisp points or soft shoulders, and how much bow-tie shadow you can live with: these are eye decisions, not report decisions. You compare real marquise stones on the desk, with a loupe, before the setting exists.

What separates a good marquise from a cheap-looking one

Marquise diamonds carry no cut grade on most reports, which means the market is full of stones that grade well and look wrong. The outline might bulge or pinch, the two points might sit slightly off-axis, or a dark bow-tie might cut the stone in half visually. None of that appears on paper, and all of it is obvious the moment the stone is in front of you.

So the sourcing works like a funnel. I call in candidates, discard most of them, and show you the few worth your time, natural and lab-grown side by side if you want the comparison. Lab-grown often buys noticeably more length for the same budget in this shape, and I’ll show you exactly what that trade looks like rather than describing it.

Outline: smooth continuous curves, no shoulders that bulge or flatten.
Point alignment: both tips on the same axis, checked under magnification.
Bow-tie: a faint one is normal, a black stripe across the middle is not.

Protecting the points without smothering the shape

The tips are the marquise’s signature and its one vulnerability: they’re where a knock concentrates, so the setting has to guard them. V-prongs are the classic answer, partial bezels a sleeker one, and I go deeper on those choices in the Marquise design direction. The discipline is keeping the protection invisible, because a marquise buried under hardware loses the slim line you chose it for.

Set north-south, the shape elongates the finger; turned east-west it becomes something lower and more modern. Both work. What matters is that the choice is made deliberately, with the actual stone taped in place on your hand before anything is built, and that you approve the final design before production starts.

Buying a marquise in San Diego without the runaround

Because good marquise stones are scarce, mall jewelers tend to steer you back toward ovals, and online listings can’t show you the outline honestly at photo resolution. Are marquise diamonds cheaper per carat than rounds?

Generally, yes, often meaningfully so, and the shape’s long spread compounds the advantage: you get more visual size per dollar than almost any other cut. The catch is that the savings are only real on a well-cut stone, which is the part that takes patience to find.

How does a wedding band work with a marquise?

Planned early, easily. A north-south marquise with a proper basket can take a straight band flush against it; east-west and sculptural settings usually call for a contour band or a designed gap. We settle that during the engagement ring design so the band is never an afterthought.

Is it hard to find certified marquise stones in both natural and lab-grown?

Harder than rounds and ovals, since cutters produce fewer of them, but the dealers I buy through carry both origins in certified goods. It sometimes takes an extra sourcing round to get candidates I’m willing to show you. I’d rather make you wait a week than hand you a mediocre outline.

Does a marquise diamond look bigger than other shapes?
