Before I touch a prong, I look at the diamond under the loupe and tell you what I see, including the chips and abrasions that eighty years of daily wear leave behind. You should know exactly what you have before you decide what to do with it.

How a reset actually goes

A reset is a sequence, not an event. The stone gets examined and documented. It comes out of the old setting with its condition in mind. Then the new design gets built around what the diamond actually is, rather than around what a size chart says it should be. None of that gets rushed, because none of it can be undone.

Older cuts want older-cut settings

Old European cuts, old mine cuts, and transitional cuts move light differently than anything cut today. They were cut for candlelight and they still behave that way. Drop one into a setting designed around a modern stone and you flatten the exact thing that made it worth inheriting.

A bezel sized to the stone’s true edge, a halo that follows its actual outline, prongs placed for its shape rather than a standard one. When the fit has to be exact, CAD lets you approve the new ring around your stone’s measurements before anything is built.

Sometimes the answer is to leave it alone

Not every heirloom should be reset, and I will say so when that is what I think. If the setting itself is the thing that matters, worn by three generations, made by hands nobody can ask anymore, then taking it apart costs more than it buys. Preserving it and building something new alongside it is often the better call.

Questions couples ask before the first appointment

Is it safe to unset an old diamond?

Usually, but not blindly. Age, chips, a thin edge, and old repair work all change how a stone should be handled. I look first and document the condition, and if a diamond needs a protective setting or should not be moved at all, you will hear that from me before anything happens.

Do I get the original setting back?

Always. The old mounting is yours. Some people keep it in a box, some hand it down anyway, and one client’s mother cried over it. It comes back either way.

What does a reset cost?

Less than most people expect, because the diamond is usually the expensive part of a ring and you already own it. The number depends on whether the new setting is existing, modified, or CAD-built, and you get it in writing before anything starts.

How long does an heirloom reset take?

Most finish in 14–30 days, the same as the engagement rings. CAD work adds review time. You will know the realistic window before the stone leaves its setting.

Can a family stone go into a completely different style?

Yes. An inherited round can live in a modern bezel, a three-stone with new sides, or an east-west setting. Honoring the stone does not mean copying the ring it came out of.
