Horizontal settings, planned from the start

East-west engagement rings in San Diego: the stone turned sideways, built to look inevitable.

An east-west ring sets the center stone across the finger instead of along it, and when it’s done well the effect is architectural: lower, wider, quietly confident. When it’s done badly, it looks like a normal ring that got rotated at the last minute. I’m Andrew Gonzalez, a private jeweler in San Diego, and the difference comes down to designing for the horizontal orientation from the first sketch: prong placement, basket shape, band width, and how the stone’s length relates to your finger. That’s a conversation we have by appointment, with stones on your hand, before anything is committed.

What I’ll want to know

  1. The shape she loves. Emerald cuts, ovals, and marquises all turn beautifully.
  2. How low she wants the ring to sit. Horizontal buys real height back.
  3. Whether an inherited stone might be the one that gets turned.

What gets decided

Orientation is a design decision, not a rotation.

We test the horizontal layout on your actual hand, choose the shape and dimensions that cover the finger deliberately, and lock the prong or bezel plan and band clearance in writing before production starts.

Which shapes earn the horizontal treatment

Emerald cuts are the natural fit: their long parallel facets read like architecture when laid across the finger. Ovals and marquise stones go softer and more organic, while radiants and cushions bring more flash to the same silhouette. What matters more than the shape name is the stone’s actual millimeter length, because a stone that looks balanced set vertically can feel either timid or excessive once it runs across the finger.

This is why I source against dimensions, not carat weight. Two stones of identical weight can differ visibly in length, and for an east-west design that difference is the whole ring. We shortlist certified stones, natural or lab-grown, and check each one on your hand in the orientation it will actually live in.

Bezel or prongs, and the case for each

A full bezel gives an east-west ring a smooth, continuous edge and protects the ends of the stone, which matters when the tips of a marquise or the corners of an emerald cut sit exposed at the sides of the finger. Prongs keep more of the outline visible and let more light in from the sides. Neither is the default; the right answer depends on the stone shape, your work and hobbies, and how low you want the ring to sit.

Because the geometry is unusual, I’ll often model the mounting in CAD so you can see the side profile and approve it before production. If you want to study the style further first, the East-West design direction walks through how I think about the orientation.

  • Full bezel for a sealed, low, modern line.
  • North-south prongs that grip the long sides without cluttering the view.
  • Half-bezel ends that protect tips and corners while keeping the middle open.
  • Band width scaled so the horizontal stone doesn’t overwhelm a thin shank.

The quiet advantage of doing this privately

East-west rings are scarce in retail cases because inventory follows the average buyer, and the average buyer sets stones vertically. That scarcity gets spun into a premium at plenty of stores. Here it’s just another custom build: same process, same appointment, same written numbers before production. You approve the design, we plan the wedding band against the horizontal profile early, and if the orientation stops feeling right once you see it on your hand, we simply turn the stone back and nobody has lost anything.

In their words

We came in with a screenshot from one of the big diamond websites, basically daring him. He sourced the same specs with a noticeably better stone, side by side you could see it, and his number was lower. Honestly didn’t expect that.

Questions couples ask before the first appointment

Can my existing or inherited diamond be reset east-west?

Very often, yes. I check the stone’s dimensions, its edge, and any vulnerable points first, then design a new mounting around the horizontal orientation. It’s one of the more satisfying ways to make a family stone feel current.

Does an east-west setting cost more than a standard one?

Not inherently. The cost driver is the same as any custom ring: the stone, the metal, and how much fabrication the design needs. A CAD-built east-west bezel is comparable to any other CAD-built setting, and I put the numbers in writing before you commit.

Will an east-west ring feel practical for daily wear?

Generally yes, because the stone can sit lower than many vertical settings. The honest caveats are stone-specific: exposed tips or corners at the sides of the finger need protection, which is a construction problem we solve before the ring is made.

What is an east-west engagement ring?

A ring where the center stone is set across the finger instead of along it. Done well the effect is lower, wider, and quietly modern, and it makes elongated shapes like the emerald cut, oval, and marquise read completely differently. Done as an afterthought it looks like a normal ring rotated at the last minute, which is why the orientation gets designed in from the first sketch.
