La Jolla has real jewelers and UTC has every chain, so couples here usually come to me with a quote in hand. They know the ring. What they want to know is whether they are about to pay boutique rent on top of it, whether the diamond is really the best one for the money, and whether there is a better way to get exactly the ring they are picturing.
There is. I am a private jeweler: no showroom, no inventory, nothing I need to sell you. I will read your quote line by line, hand-pick a diamond for the same look from the brokers I have used for thirty years, and put both in front of you. Then the ring is made to order, in CAD or from a proven setting, around the stone you choose. Sometimes the answer is still: buy it there, it's fair. You will know either way.

How I work
Stone first: shape, measurements, cut, color, clarity, the lab. Then the setting: metal weight, how it's made, whether it's a stock mounting or built. Then what's included: sizing, appraisal, the band. Most quotes are vague on purpose. I'll make yours specific so the comparison is fair.
Plenty of people around UTC and University City search for loose diamonds and end up at a counter. I source stones to the project instead: graded, seen by me, compared side by side. You choose the stone first, then we build around it, or you take the stone to a setting you already love.
I'll tell you. If a La Jolla jeweler has quoted you a fair price on a stone I'd buy myself, I'll say so and send you back. My reputation is worth more than one ring, and you'll remember who told you the truth.
The comparison
Send the quote by text, then we talk it through on a call: what it's really paying for and what I'd do differently. If it's worth going further, I source stones and we compare them against the quote, by photo and video or at the Jewelers Exchange if you'd rather look yourself. If it isn't, I'll tell you that on the call.

Comparison shopping, done properly
I don't mind at all that you've been to a boutique first. I'd rather you had. It gives us something concrete to talk about. Send me the quote exactly as it was given to you and I'll go through it the way I would if I were buying the stone myself: is this cut well, does the color grade match what the stone will look like in that metal, is this clarity grade clean where it counts, and what is the setting actually made of.
Then the part most people don't get from a counter: what it would cost to source the same look directly. Not the same SKU. The same look, with a stone I've seen, in a setting built for it.
Couples have come to me basically daring me to beat a screenshot. Sometimes I can't, and I say so. Usually I can, and the difference is visible side by side.
A boutique on Prospect Street or a counter at UTC carries rent, staff, a showcase full of rings that have to be paid for, and a brand. Those are real costs and they're baked into the ticket. That isn't a criticism; it's how retail works, and a good boutique earns part of that margin with service and selection.
I work differently. I buy the stone for your ring after you have told me the look and the number, so the money goes into the diamond and the workmanship instead of the overhead. And because custom jewelers pick stones one at a time for a specific client, we see the good material before the bulk buyers do; the online platforms get what we pass on and mark it up. That is why I can often put a better stone next to a retail quote at a similar number, and also why I need a few days to do it: I go and get the stone for you.
What you get is a ring built around one decision, yours, with someone who will tell you when not to spend.
A lot of the loose-diamond searches I see from around UTC are couples who want to pick the stone first and think about the setting second. That's a good instinct. The stone is most of the money and all of the sparkle.
The way I do it: tell me the shape, the range, and whether you want natural, lab-grown, or both on the desk. I source graded stones, look at every one, and bring only the ones I'd buy. You see them side by side under the same light and choose. If you already have a setting, we build around your stone; if you don't, we design one, and the profile gets decided with the actual stone in front of us.

Proposal planning
La Jolla Cove at golden hour is the most photographed proposal in the county, and it's crowded on weekend evenings for exactly that reason. Windansea and the tide pools south of it stay quieter, especially on weeknights, and the light is just as good. Coastal light is generous to crisp profiles and clean metal and unforgiving to a setting that sits too tall to hold steady in the wind.
A practical note from years of watching this go well: settle the sizing plan before the date. A ring that fits that evening beats a perfect ring in the wrong size, and a quiet resize afterward is easy to arrange either way.
